June 2015

We had the pleasure of attending the world premiere of Addicted to Sheep at Sheffield Doc Fest, the film made by Magali Pettier was very well received.

Esme's paintings are displayed on the SSBA stand at North Sheep Milestone Moor, a very proud day.

Amazing sunset, it is a privilege to live here, yes we get days where we are battling the elements (in fact you can't stand up straight for the wind and raining hammering you!) but you get a scene like this and all is forgiven.

September 2014

Showing at Moorcock Show, two tup lambs by home bred tup Kingshaugh Yan, both did rather well, which we were delighted with.

 March 2013

The polytunnel is up and running, filled with ewes. They are very content, they have had a rough last 3 months, constant rain. The last few days of dry weather have very much been welcome, we have even seen the sun.

Cattle have sold well of late, a bulling pedigree Hereford heifer sold at Carlisle for 1700gns, then two pure bred Limousin store beast (1 heifer & 1 bullock) at Middleton-in-Teesdale averaged £1022.50 both by Goldies Fusilier.

November 2013

Another successful Langdon Beck Show, there was a fabulous show of sheep, a credit to all the exhibitors. We had another great show, with Reserve District Champion with a gimmer shearling by the Neil Richardson tup.

Breeding ewes, gimmer lambs and tup sales all finished with for another year. It was a funny year, no sales buzz and you never knew how you were going to do until you had been through the ring. Think the very difficult spring, high feed costs, steady mule lamb trade resulted in a lot of caution and little to invest.

KINGSHAUGH YODA

Kingshaugh Yoda sold Hawes Tup Sales

We are now getting this years calves ready for sales, the first being on the 5th Nov at Middleton-in-Teesdale, with the remaining Pedigree Limousin calves being sold at the BLCS Weaned Calf at Carlisle in December.

Hay time

We finished hay and silage at the end of August with help from neighbours. Crop is slightly down but on the whole it is good quality. Made some lovely little bales of hay in July.

At the Great Yorkshire Show got 2nd with Kingshaugh XS and 4th with a ewe, it was an extreme hot day and spent most of the day in shade watching the clipping. Our next show is a local show, Eggleston on the 21st September then Langdon Beck Show on the 28th September.

Tom and John finished all but one of their clipping contracts by the end of July which is a first. Tom is now dressing Mule gimmer shearlings and lambs.

We have dipped and coloured shot gimmer lambs and draft ewes. Swaledale gimmer lambs are for Middleton-in-Teesdale on the 20th September and Hawes on the 12th October. Draft ewes Middleton-in-Teesdale on 30th September. Swaledale tup shearlings were inspected and crowned yesterday for SSBA sales in October.

After the harsh Spring we endured, we decided to purchase a sheep housing polytunnel, enabling us to house some ewes for a short period of time during the worst weather and allowing the land to rest and hopefully to grow ready for ewes and lambs getting turned out. The tunnel has been delivered and the proposed site levelled, next stage build, which we are going to do ourselves with a lot of help from a neighbour.

June 2013

Couple of weeks of sunshine makes all the difference, stock looks a lot happier and the grass is starting to grow.  Showed at a couple of spring sheep shows High Force and Eastgate, the quality of stock that exhibitors had on show was a credit to all considering the spring that we have been through.

Over half way through June now, Tom has been contract clipping over a fortnight now. Need to start thinking about getting Swaledales ready for The Great Yorkshire Show. One cow left to calve, a Vivaldi cow due to Attriant, looking forward to that one for two reasons, believe it will be a good cross and its the last cow!

May 2013

Spring 2013 at Bail Hill has been very difficult, the farm has been hit by snow that blew, cold wet and windy weather then followed, that hit the in-lamb ewes hard. We did lose ewes and lambs due to these conditions, but on a positive note we are very happy with the quality and sort of lambs we have on the ground. We only have two cows left to calve, so far all calved natural with a run of heifer calves, which are shaping up nicely. Limousin sires used this year include Goldies Fusilier, Ananas Ben, Taymar Diageo, Bolide and Attriant.

February 2013

Started calving, mostly heifers to stock bull Goldies Fusilier, all heifer calves so far, and pleased with them.

We were also 4th with a Gimmer Shearling, she is by the Skidmore tup.

She was purchased as a gimmer lamb from Geoff & Carol Marwood, Long Green. She is by one of their own tups RM B36077 and out of a ewe got with their Paul Hallam B32962. We also achieved 5th with the Catlow tup and 3rd with a Paul Hallam bred gimmer hogg.
